I'm a doula!

Do not read this if birthing stories gross you out or are not interesting to you.
I’m so excited to tell you about my first experience as a doula, or at least the first six births that I was able to help with.
My first client was Kenny. It was Kenny’s first birth and she was nervous. Luckily she had me to cheer her on. She was visibly bothered by the contractions at 6PM, until then she was able to go about her daily tasks. When the contractions got quite strong, we moved her to her bed. (This was a homebirth.) She tried several different positions. She was mostly quiet, but every now and then she would holler. It was then that I would work my doula magic and say all the things a mother giving birth wants to hear. The dad is not in the picture so it was just Kenny and I there. It was a bonding moment and at one point when she was extra nervous, she gave me a little lick when I scratched under her chin. Around 7PM I could see she was crowning and her bag of waters had not yet broken. After a few yelps and me starting to think something was wrong, out came a beautiful black and white baby kitten and then within the next hour and a half came five other adorable little ones. It was great fun for me and will probably be the only time I will experience a live birth. I’ll take what I can get. I’m a grandma. I’m so proud of Kenny. She was so brave and did so well.

This is hilarious. I totally did not get that you were talking about a cat until the very end. I reread the part about her licking you a couple of times, thinking that something was a little off. Anyway, glad to hear that Kenny is doing well. :)

I am totally laughing... like the comment from Jody... I thought Kenny was a woman. When you mentioned licking I had a very strange visual, until I realized it was a cat.

Well congrats to you and the new mother!
LOL, you got me too! I was thinking, How cool, she's a doula now. Kittens are so cute!

And me...you always make me laugh. We had kittens last summer and my kids loved it. What a great learning experience for them. I can't help but wonder what I would want my doula to say...I usually just want silence as everything else makes me want to yell.

Okay Kelly, here's the deal- we actually want to have another baby but have the ole high deductible thing and out here in AZ birth is not included so- we can't really afford to have another one right now. That being said... now that you have six under your belt (and 7if you include the one that Glenn did) maybe you could come out here and deliver our baby... I mean, of course, after we get pregnant... Just a thought- we'd pay for your flight and hotel...

I am having a hard time controlling my outburst of laughter--Derrell is asleep five feet away. You really must write a book, Kelly!

Ok I am laughing so hard right now!! Sorry Kelly, this is Mandy (Glen's cousin). I too was freaked out at the licking thing. What a funny post!!
Kelly, this is hillarious! (It's Jenny here, Glen's cousin in Okinawa). I was so impressed that you had helped with 6 births! Then as I read furhter, I sort of became a bit weirded out until I understood that "Kenny" was a cat! Great post!
